Fireworks
back to pets info
Fireworks night is nearly upon us and already pets
are becoming distressed.
A few tips to help you get through the fireworks period:
feed a large meal rich in carbohydrates
before the start of a display
ensure they go to the toilet before the noise starts
create a secure "den" in which your pet
can stay before the fireworks are due to start.
(don't lock them in)
keep the room dark and close windows
leave toys and something with your smell
in the room. have lots of blankets so they
can 'dig' to make a den
dogs may want something to chew to relieve tension
moderately loud rhythmic music with a good beat
is an effective way to mask the noises
install a Dap diffuser in or near the den.
install 2 weeks before if possible (until 2 weeks
after) or at least a few days before.
this may help dogs feel relaxed and calmer
herbal remedies may help: we
use scullcap and valerian tablets and
valerian compound liquid
stronger drugs are available after
a consultation with the veterinary surgeon
keep cats indoors
check outdoor pets regularly
most importantly - when possible - people
in the house should not react to the firework noises,
pets look to you for reactions and if you make a fuss then they
will think there is something to worry about.
Remember, all pets react differently and we have given
general advice. For much more information contact
the surgery on 01383 732897. We have hand-outs that
give more information and tips.
Ask about the "Sounds Scary" cd, this is a de-sensitisation
programe that may help your pet for next year.
